Claudius Galen — The Physician Who Defined Western Medicine for 1,300 Years
Claudius Galen was born in Pergamon in 129 AD and became the most celebrated physician of the ancient world — a title that, remarkably, held for over thirteen centuries after his death. Physician to several Roman emperors including Marcus Aurelius, Galen was the first to conduct systematic experiments on living organisms to understand how the body works, pioneering what would eventually become the scientific method in medicine. His writings on anatomy, the nervous system, and pharmacology became the definitive medical texts of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. It was Galen who first established that the brain, not the heart, controls movement and sensation. It was Galen who created the first systematic pharmacopoeia. The Galen Apartments at 1626 SW 14th St honors this legacy in a setting that would have pleased him — within walking distance of UF Health, the University of Florida College of Medicine, and UF Health Shands Hospital, where physicians in training and medical researchers continue the work he began nearly two millennia ago.
